Jay’s Answer: Who is your target market? What problems of theirs do you solve? What makes you unique? Why should people trust you?

These questions are the core for your marketing strategy. Without one, you’ll be wasting time and money trying to attract attention.

To build trust, for example, provide lots of white papers or articles that demonstrate your expertise. Team up with other related businesses and co-market. Provide an after-market solution to another business (IT support) following a purchase.

  1. Cool ideas, Jay. I’d also add that with marketing, an entrepreneur really has to get herself in front of those targeted customers. The more people know about her services, the better chance she gives herself to succeed.

As a business to business marketing consultant, I recommend that my clients (all of whom sell complex products and services)gear their marketing efforts at getting permission to stay high on prospective clients’ radar until they’re ready to buy–rather than going for the kill right away. Why? Because these prospects involve many in their buying process–all of whom have different requirements–so sales cycles stretch out. It’s imperative to keep corresponding so that you’re there when they’re finally ready to buy. Consider an email newsletter or a blog with an RSS feed like this one–and then provide valuable content so that they dare not pass it by…
