See Yourself On The Radio!

Marketing yourself with radio?

Have you been contacted by an organization who is pitching a seemingly great offer: they’ll produce your own radio show and/or invite you to be guest on someone else’s show? It sounds like fame has finally come knocking on you door, or has it?

It seems that all you have to do is simply talk, and people will listen (and your notoriety will grow). The radio station will handle the distribution, scheduling, and technology. You’ll simply need to find topics to talk about and/or guests to interview, and away you go. If it sounds too good to be true, it’s because it is.

Radio stations (whether online-only or broadcast) make money from advertising. For you to get on-air, the money needs to come from somewhere (hint: the radio stations are contacting you to help them make money). So, your first goal is sponsorship. If you already have great relationships with other companies that love your “brand”, then sponsorship may be relatively easy for you to achieve. However, for most of us, sponsors will care about a few things: the number/demographics of your listener base and how the sponsors will benefit. But if you’re just launching your radio show, you don’t have any listeners, so you’ll likely need to self-fund the radio show initially.

Your second goal is listeners. The radio stations will push your message to their existing subscriber base, but that’s likely not to help you much. So, you’ll have to market the show yourself (or hire someone to help you). And with increasingly more competition for listeners, getting sufficient listeners to interest sponsors is hard work (even for the seasoned professionals).

If you’re asked to be a guest on a radio show, ask if there’s a fee involved. A number of organizations offer the “opportunity” to interview you and broadcast your interview in a number of different channels. But it’s ultimately a pay-for-interview model, where the production values of interview isn’t being controlled by people who necessarily place your needs first.

Getting a show on the air may be a nice addition to your professional portfolio (and your ego), but these days it’s easy for people to produce and distribute their own podcast using desktop software. And because it’s easy, it’s not as unique as it once was. If you’re thinking of working with these radio stations, do your homework. Talk to hosts who have shows similar to yours, and carefully listen to their experiences and expenses.

Speak With Passion: Passionate & Scatter-Brained?

Passionate & Scatter-Brained?

One of the keys to giving a great speech is to share your passion. Your passion is infectious, and your audience gets to vicariously experience your story. But if your speech isn’t well thought out, your talk may become rambling, and make your audience very frustrated. They can feel your passion. They know you have something exciting to tell them, but they can’t “get it”. And they want to. Here are some tips to keep you on-target:

  • Start at the ending. What is the key one or two points you want to leave your audience with? What is your call-to-action (what you want them to do afterwards)?
  • Start at the beginning. Where in the landscape of your story do you want to start? Why there? How does this starting point related to both your ending and your audience?
  • Build a bridge. Scattered-brained people get distracted on their journeys – often going on a lot of side-trips that somehow turn into digressions. Stay on the highway of your talk’s focus. If you do take a side-trip, it must be informative, and come back to the highway for a good reason. Too many side trips and the audience loses the feel of the highway. There are great storytellers that can string together a number of side trips into a journey (Malcolm Gladwell, for example), but it’s a rare skill. Keep your message clear so your audience will remember your story.
  • Refer to your notes. If you get nervously distracted during your talk, have some notes to remind you of the key landmarks you want to visit. Don’t do any extemporaneous speaking. It’s likely to get you in trouble.

Give your audience the gift of a clear, well-understood speech. They’ll likely want to come back to you for more information later.

Marketing For Metal Bands

I am in a metal band in Sacramento CA. We have a CD out, and we have some interest in other cities like Reno NV, but we obviously want to go farther. We are on Facebook, and there are a ton of like for like pages that help us get likes, which helps us get our name out there. But we want to do something more than that. Obviously there are ads that we can purchase, but do you have any ideas on how else to get the name out there? We have shirts, and stickers, as well as a full length CD. We have a .com, and we have the facebook page. We have limited money to work with, so I am looking for something that is cheap and effective we can do that will help us get some fans. We are called Steel Savior.

Jay’s Answer:  Improve your videos, to give people an inspired feeling of what it’s like to hear you live. As for getting known, try by doing something different: volunteer for Make-A-Wish performances or in the SF Bay Area Bread & Roses. That’ll help spread your humanity. As for increasing your fan base, empower your fans to help you with more than “likes”. Can you have a private VIP concert for your fans? Or, find someone to play/sing with that’ll stretch you both musically (and increase your audience reach as well)?

Race Fundraiser Name To Support Free Clinics

We’re a group of medical students that hold an annual fundraiser to support our student-run organizations: Flying Samaritans (where we hold a free clinic in Mexico http://www.flyingsams.com/wp/) and UCI Outreach Clinic (http://www.ucioutreachclinics.org/). The fundraiser is a 5K/Half-Marathon race held in conjunction with the Kaiser Permanente SoCal 5K/Half-Marathon in Irvine. We want to register our own participants to have a somewhat separate identity from the Kaiser race for fundraising purposes. The funds raised/donated to us from this race are the sole sources of funding for both these organizations which provide free medical care (from medical students) to those in need. We need ideas for the race name (thus far it’s been called the UCI SOM 5K/Half-Marathon Fundraiser) and logo ideas for our shirts/webpages.

Candy Store & Art Gallery Name

I need help to come up with a name for my new business that will sell sweets, and my own artwork. I will make and sell fudge for retail and wholesale purchasing, but I will also carry nuts, trail mix and a full line of fine chocolates from a well-known chocolate company nearby (sort-of a second retail location for that candy company). I would like to include my name if it’s possible … either my first name Sue, or my last name Hart. Would the name “A Work of Hart …” be something I could incorporate? The business is located on a coastal river in eastern Maine.

As an artist, I’ve designed my own logo that includes a heart-shaped sun rising over a chocolate river. The sky around the sun is in warm tones of golden caramel and orange, and the river looks like chocolate with caramel-colored reflections of the rising sun running through it. I’d like to paint this logo/mural on the main wall of my shop and continue with the chocolate river (receding in lighter warm tones) on two other walls. I will paint the entire ceiling to look like a sky with clouds that reflect the colors of the rising sun. The floors are already warm wood and will compliment the artwork.

Note: One major wall that runs the entire length of the shop will remain neutral/off white, and will be a gallery wall for my murals, floorcloths and other artwork. I will also incorporate my other handmade items throughout the store. I have rustic shelving and cupboards; an antique cash register; a 10′ long antique counter with 20 frontal openings for product in baskets; 2 beautiful antique wood stoves; and plenty of tables and miscellaneous displays for products. However, I’m finding it difficult to come up with a name for this store. I appreciate any ideas that you may offer, which will help to make my dreams come true!

We are a family owned and operated business who also specialize in police car and security vehicle custom installations. We need a tagline that will match up with our cartoon police car logo. The target audience is local businesses, people who are moving here or moving away and need storage for an indefinite amount of time. I want people to feel that we can keep their belongings safe and secure and that we are trustworthy. The name of the company is FCI Self Storage & Custom Police Vehicles. We need a phrase that can tie it all together.

What Do You Think Of My Store’s Tagline?

I just opened a home decor and gift store which is in a very rural area. The name of my business is FOUR GIRLS LAUGHING. I do have HOME DECOR AND GIFTS under the name. But I was wanting a tag line “Unique Home Decor and Gifts For A Song and a Laugh”! Could you tell me what you think? I already am getting known for my reasonable prices, and the catchy name.

Jay’s Answer: It sounds like you’re thinking of changing your tagline from “Home Décor and Gifts” to “Unique Home Decor and Gifts For A Song and a Laugh”. But I don’t like your proposed tagline. Why?

First of all, it’s too long. To test it – when your next customer walks into the store, ask them if they’d be willing to take a quick test. Tell them the new tagline once, and ask them to repeat it. Odds are, they won’t be able to, because it’s too many words and too many images.

Secondly, how does “…for a Song and a Laugh” help explain what you’re selling or to whom? “For a song” connotes bargains – are you selling things inexpensively (“reasonable” and “inexpensive” are two different things) and/or want to convey lower-quality goods? “..and a Laugh” simply echoes your store’s name, but doesn’t add anything to the message. However, if you’re selling things that no one else in your area is, then “Unique” does make sense. That leaves you with:

Four Girls Laughing
Unique Home Décor and Gifts

Which is a nice, basic tagline.

Tagline For Re-branding a Resort-type Hotel

i need help in coming up with the right one for a resort hotel that is re-branding and upgrading to create a new brand image. we are located in a province near the capital so it creates that home away from home feel for vacationers while giving locals a new option for a place to stay. our hotel has a unique selling point since we have a casino, a coffee shop, a separate events hall & ballroom, all within our compound, as well as soon to rise spa & salon plus the new pool. the name of the hotel is King’s Royale Hotel & Resort. we want to veer away from anything associated with king or queen as that was already used in the past. much better if the tagline would capture the essence of the place as a whole…
