Candy Store & Art Gallery Name

I need help to come up with a name for my new business that will sell sweets, and my own artwork. I will make and sell fudge for retail and wholesale purchasing, but I will also carry nuts, trail mix and a full line of fine chocolates from a well-known chocolate company nearby (sort-of a second retail location for that candy company). I would like to include my name if it’s possible … either my first name Sue, or my last name Hart. Would the name “A Work of Hart …” be something I could incorporate? The business is located on a coastal river in eastern Maine.

As an artist, I’ve designed my own logo that includes a heart-shaped sun rising over a chocolate river. The sky around the sun is in warm tones of golden caramel and orange, and the river looks like chocolate with caramel-colored reflections of the rising sun running through it. I’d like to paint this logo/mural on the main wall of my shop and continue with the chocolate river (receding in lighter warm tones) on two other walls. I will paint the entire ceiling to look like a sky with clouds that reflect the colors of the rising sun. The floors are already warm wood and will compliment the artwork.

Note: One major wall that runs the entire length of the shop will remain neutral/off white, and will be a gallery wall for my murals, floorcloths and other artwork. I will also incorporate my other handmade items throughout the store. I have rustic shelving and cupboards; an antique cash register; a 10′ long antique counter with 20 frontal openings for product in baskets; 2 beautiful antique wood stoves; and plenty of tables and miscellaneous displays for products. However, I’m finding it difficult to come up with a name for this store. I appreciate any ideas that you may offer, which will help to make my dreams come true!

What Do You Think Of My Store’s Tagline?

I just opened a home decor and gift store which is in a very rural area. The name of my business is FOUR GIRLS LAUGHING. I do have HOME DECOR AND GIFTS under the name. But I was wanting a tag line “Unique Home Decor and Gifts For A Song and a Laugh”! Could you tell me what you think? I already am getting known for my reasonable prices, and the catchy name.

###

Jay’s Answer: It sounds like you’re thinking of changing your tagline from “Home Décor and Gifts” to “Unique Home Decor and Gifts For A Song and a Laugh”. But I don’t like your proposed tagline. Why?

First of all, it’s too long. To test it – when your next customer walks into the store, ask them if they’d be willing to take a quick test. Tell them the new tagline once, and ask them to repeat it. Odds are, they won’t be able to, because it’s too many words and too many images.

Secondly, how does “…for a Song and a Laugh” help explain what you’re selling or to whom? “For a song” connotes bargains – are you selling things inexpensively (“reasonable” and “inexpensive” are two different things) and/or want to convey lower-quality goods? “..and a Laugh” simply echoes your store’s name, but doesn’t add anything to the message. However, if you’re selling things that no one else in your area is, then “Unique” does make sense. That leaves you with:

Four Girls Laughing
Unique Home Décor and Gifts

Which is a nice, basic tagline.

Tagline For Re-branding a Resort-type Hotel

i need help in coming up with the right one for a resort hotel that is re-branding and upgrading to create a new brand image. we are located in a province near the capital so it creates that home away from home feel for vacationers while giving locals a new option for a place to stay. our hotel has a unique selling point since we have a casino, a coffee shop, a separate events hall & ballroom, all within our compound, as well as soon to rise spa & salon plus the new pool. the name of the hotel is King’s Royale Hotel & Resort. we want to veer away from anything associated with king or queen as that was already used in the past. much better if the tagline would capture the essence of the place as a whole…

Business Conference At The Beach

I am attempting to come up with a tagline/theme for a trade show and conference at VA Beach next summer. The trade show is for a water well drilling association with membership up and down the East Coast. There have been 57 previous events, however, this is the first at VA Beach. So there have been a plethora of themes already, and the company wants something new. We want to get people excited about VA Beach, but also have it tied into water, because, after all, it is a water well driller association.

Our clients travel the world, and so their footprints have a big impact on communities all over the world they visit. We believe it is our corporate responsibility to give back to communities we impact. So I am looking for a really catchy name for the program. I like names with humor, but that also have meaning. A Tagline For Our University Bookstore?

We sell university books, school books and stationery and a lot more. Can you tell us a tagline that will attract more customers?

###

Jay’s Answer: A tagline alone won’t suddenly attract customers. A tagline may help people quickly see what makes you different and/or clearly identify what you sell.

Your website doesn’t describe what products/services you offer, nor give people a reason to purchase from you. So, my first suggestion is to clearly identify what you sell and to who. Where are they located? What makes you better/different from your competition? If you are selling the same things as others, then figure out ways to differentiate your services (don’t simply try to have the lowest cost products – as a small business, it’s almost always a losing proposition).

Also, if everyone is selling the same things, you need to compete on services. What can you do for people that they can’t easily do themselves? Can you deliver books in the middle of the night? Will you trade older editions for newer books? Will you offer a digital copy of the book for a minimal extra cost? Can you team up with a local tutoring service?

My suggestion is to focus on your marketing strategy first. Then, integrate your unique benefit into your tagline, making sure that it fits with your company’s name.
